Gloomy Bear Cake - A Scientist Bakes!

A couple of weeks ago one of the guys who I work with told us he had taken on the challenge presented by his girlfriend to make a cake of an anime styled character: a somewhat scary pink teddy bear called Gloomy Bear who has a rugby ball shaped head and just happens to be a bit of a bully. I was so impressed with his efforts that I knew it would be perfect to post on "The Sweet Tooth Chronicles."

If you don’t want to possibly ruin any cherished childhood memories you might have that involve a teddy bear, I suggest that you go no further, BUT for the brave keep reading!

Just to give you a bit of a back story, this is how it goes. Gloomy Bear, an abandoned little bear, is rescued by Pitty (a little boy). At first, he is cute and cuddly, but becomes more wild as he grows up. Since bears do not become attached to people like dogs by nature, Gloomy attacks Pitty even though he is his owner. So, Gloomy has blood on him from biting and/or scratching Pitty. Apparently his creator was trying to get the message across that wild animals should be left in the wild, and that humans have no business trying to tame them.

Being a medical physicist Casper had a plan of action! A cake stand for the center of the cake to help support the odd shaped head for which he used a football Shaped cake tin . The arms and legs were made by molding those BBQ foil trays around a pestle - ingenious I tell you!

Now being a true scientist he did admit to delegating a bit of the work here and there, but I have to say I am well impressed with the sheer magnitude of this attempt and the first and last of its kind, so I'm told! Not only was there the layer of fondant icing which, depending on my mood, some days I love and other days I hate, But it was placed over a layer of chocolate icing. So yum! Now I guarantee if I had tried to do that my lack of patience would have resulted in smudged chocolate finger prints all over the baby pink layer. So - nice work Casper and all his little helpers and thanks for sharing all your great photos!!

  1. I work with a lot of medical physicists (and other physicists, as well) and I wish I could put this cake at the coffee pot over on the Theory hall- they would have a laugh...and then devour it all!
